NUBUN
Nure“ means the female song“ in the Kurdish language. That´s why the Kurdish singer Aynur Erdogan took this name almost nine years ago when she began performing with her all female band. Born in 1962 in the Sievas province (the Turkish part of Kurdistan), Nure grew up with her grandparents before coming to Germany at the age of 13 to live with her parents.
Her father played the saz and her grandmother loved to sing. Nure took many of these songs to her new home in Germany. There are many Kurdish dance tunes and songs which tell stories or remind us of the lives of people who have come before. But there are also songs which are meant to support the Kurdish identity.
For Nure, the lead singer of the band Nubun, music is a way to keep the Kurdish people connected to each other, though living in separate countries. Nure´s music speaks of a longed-for Kurdistan and her songs tell of the oppression of her people.
For this reason, Berlin is a better environment for Nure´s work than Turkey, where Kurdish musicians are still prosecuted. Nubun, which means renewal“, has become quite successful among the younger audience.
The band goes beyond the traditional perception of Kurdish music, creating their own mixture of world music with a special flair brought in by singer Nure´s voice and stories.
