ADARO

Rock music and the Middle Ages are like two fascinating poles, parted by 700 years of history and tension. Who would have thought that a cantiga taken from a medieval song collection could be reborn through the modern harmonies of a rock band and the rhythmical elements of world music. Well, Adaro is just such a band, made up of rock musicians who specialize in the music of the Middle Ages.
They love to combine the archaic sounds of instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, pipes and bombard with electric guitar, midi guitar, electronic drums and loops.
The material Adaro used for the tracks of their current CD goes back to the 13th and 14th century. The two Spanish song collections used, Cantigas de Santa Maria“ and Llibre Vermell“, give an idea of a time long gone. Everyday life stories are portrayed in lyrics filled with wit and humour. The cantigas predate our present understanding of multiculturalism. Alfons the Wise“, the earliest editor of these musical collections, hired artists and troubadours from the Christian, Jewish and Islamic worlds to compile these songs.
The lyrics used on this CD are in the ancient Galician language and take on new meaning with modern arrangements by Adaro. Lead singer Christoph Pelgen turns the old ballad Ave Maria“ into a hard rock piece.
His masterly musicianship on the bombard, the flute and the pipes makes some of the cantigas sound like a pop charts hit or a hiphop tune.
