CATHRIN PFEIFER

If you happen to be the proud owner of at least one of JAMS two albums, you will be familiar with the name of Cathrin Pfeifer: Cathrin (at that time still spelled with a »K«) was JAMS accordionist. Cathrin Pfeifer received a degree in music from the University Hanns Eisler in Berlin. She worked as a musician in the theatre production of »The Egg« (1985/86), then joined JAMS for five years and returned to the theatre (dance theatre »Scoronel«).
Since then she has worked with numerous musicians and bands: Ahava Raba, a Berlin-based band playing improvised music with Yiddish and East European roots, Egypts Ali Hassan Kuban and Leipzigs Bierfiedler.
Her latest musical encounter is an accordion-percussion duet with Argentinian-born Topo Gioia, »a congenial partnership which manifests itself in inspiring, exciting rhythms.« (NNN; 30.3.1995) Together they mix »Russian melancholy, French stylishness and Irish spontaneity« (FREIE PRESSE; 24.5.1995) thus creating »moods between a street carnival and a journey through a tropical rain forest.
There's room for cheerful, vivacious exhilaration as much as for elegiac and contemplative moments« (LVZ Leipzig, 27.7.1995). Other reviewers thought along similiar lines:
»To be brief: delicious, danceable, and very poetic world music for which one doesnt need more than two wonderful virtuosos, one accordeon and a collection of natural-sounding percussion instruments.« (TEMPLINER ZEITUNG, 25.9.1995)
»A very poetic music which is something very special particularly in an era where the endless copying of ideas has become the rule.« (JAZZthetik 10/95)
